I can feel the pain Rubina had in her heart while she was writing this column as her words express it clearly. This column is obviously written with lots of emotions. The writer’s frustrations and a constant disappointment from the behavior of the people of that God forsaken country cannot be concealed. The Farzana case is not merely just one isolated case, it’s an on-going saga of backward mentalities which are centuries old in that land and hundreds of such situations take place regularly year after year and I certainly do not see an end to such cases in the near future.  The illiteracy and poverty has existed for hundreds of years, but the present day lawlessness, poor governance, lack of police and court actions in general, provide encouragement to the backward element of the society. Unfortunately, about 90% population of that country is still backward when it comes to woman related issues.

Historically, a woman has always been taken to be a second class member of the society  throughout the world. The change of attitudes that we see in the West is only about a 100 years old. The countries like Pakistan and most other lands around the globe have a long way to go to understand that woman is not just the other half of the population, but also, she is every man’s mother, sister, wife and a daughter as well.

There are several contradictory reports which have been floating around about this incident, its background and the actual execution of the murder in the heat of action of two parties against each other. But one fact stands out openly and very clearly, there is no value of human life in Pakistan. This incident happened in front of the court house and right in the company of the policemen, but there was no one there who could interject and save a human life which could have been done so easily – but apparently not done in Pakistan.

are there any lessons to be learned for the general public, the police and the government officials out of this incident? There are several lessons to be learned, but I am sure none will be learned and similar situations will always have same result and it will keep on happening for a long time to come in that unfortunate society.
